Bakuchiol is a meroterpene (a chemical compound having a partial terpenoid structure) in the class terpenophenolic, obtained from seeds of Bakuchi (Psoralea corylifolia Linn).
Bakuchiol is the first natural alternative to Retinol without having any of the negatives associated with retinol. It is photochemically and hydrolytically stable and can be used during the day. Bakuchiol is a highly purified meroterpene of natural origin having no structural resemblance to retinoids. Multiple comparative studies revealed that Bakuchiol to be a true alternative to retinol and its functionality was further confirmed for type I, III and IV collagens and aquaporin 3 by ELISA and histochemistry.
Bakuchiol has been studied as an antioxidant for its ability to interfere with free radical producing systems, inhibit microsomal lipid peroxidation, decrease translocation of mitochondrial apoptosis induced factor (AIF), and quench superoxide – and hydroxyl radicals in vitro. It also can inhibit matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) MMP-1 more effectively than retinol. Even though Bakuchiol can function like retinol in the regulation of gene expression, it has a much better tolerability profile than retinoids and does not require dose escalation. It is also photostable providing for greater formulation ease.
RETINOL(RETINOIC ACID &TRETINOIN):
The poor tolerability of the retinoids has limited their use in sensitive skin, even though retinoids use some of the most effective anti-aging cosmeceutical ingredients. Retinoids are effective because they activate retinoic acid receptors and retinoid X receptors, each with three isotypes(Alpha, Beta and Gamma) and multiple isoforms, responsible for regulating growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. Retinol can be converted in the skin to retinaldehyde, and then retinoic acid can cause irritation due to an overload of the retinoic acid dependent pathways with supraphysiological amounts of exogenous retinoic acid. Difficult to combine retinoid efficacy with tolerability frequently experiencing pruritus, erythema and xerosis with use.
